Mosquito Repellents: The Complete Guide

Nov 15, 2023

What is mosquito coils?

Mosquito coils are spiral structures composed of an adhesive mixed with an insecticide or repellent. When it burns, it releases insecticide or repellent to repel mosquitoes. They can be hung, mounted on a stand, or burned in ceramic, metal or terra cotta stands.

What are the ingredients in mosquito coils?

Mosquito coils are an insecticide or repellent mixed with an adhesive that can also be used as fuel. Some pesticides are:

Pyrethrum powder: It comes from the crushed whole flowers of chrysanthemum, a species of chrysanthemum plant, also known as pyrethrum. It has toxic effects on the nervous system of insects.

Pyrethrin: This is a more refined extract of pyrethrin powder. Pyrethrins have been used since the 1950s.

Pyrethroids: This is a group of synthetic pesticides similar to pyrethrum. The first synthetic pyrethrin, d-trans-allethrin, was formulated in the late 1940s. Metofluthrin, another synthetic pyrethrin, is considered very effective against mosquitoes.

How to use mosquito coils

Mosquito coils are easy to use, but remember to follow label directions:

Use the coil on a porch or patio where the breeze is minimal.

If you have multiple packages, gently separate the coils.

Place the coil on a hanger or stand according to the manufacturer's instructions. If using a stand, place it on a flat surface. (Maybe use a flat pan or tray underneath to catch the ashes.)

If you are using a metal or ceramic container, place the coil in it.

Light the end of the coil and allow it to burn 1/4 inch. Blow out the flame and allow the coil to smolder. If you use a container, put a lid on it.

To extinguish a fire, carefully break off the smoldering part and place it in the water. Some people recommend wrapping the smoldering end in aluminum foil.

Some safety tips

Mosquito coils can cause fires, so be careful when handling them:

Do not use coils internally.

Do not use in windy conditions.

Place on a non-flammable surface. If you hang the coil, place it above a non-flammable surface and place a metal or ceramic pan or container underneath to collect the ash.

Keep flammable materials and liquids away from coils.

Do not leave them unattended or out of the reach of children or pets.

Do not place the coil in an area where you may step on it.
